Volunteers fill many roles at the Susquehanna Folk Festival! Take a look at the Crew descriptions below and let us know where you see yourself best fitting in.
Performer Transportation Crew
The Performer Transportation Crew makes sure that performers are safely transported to and from the airport and hotel and helps them carry instruments and equipment around the festival site. Safe driving skills, timeliness, ability to lift and carry, and good people skills are required. Knowledge of the local area is helpful. Shifts are available 9 AM to 11 PM on Saturday, 9 AM to 8 PM on Sunday, and on Friday and Monday as needed.
Family Tent Crew
The Family Tent Crew supports the program coordinator with children’s activities including preparation of craft materials and supervision of children and families in creating the projects. Teaching, supervisory, or recreational experience with children is preferred. Prospective volunteers must upload copies of a current Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance and a Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check. To apply for those clearances, click here. Shifts are available on Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM.
Mercantile Tent Crew
The Mercantile Tent Crew dispenses information about the festival site and surrounding community, oversees the lost-and-found, addresses visitor concerns, sells performers’ CDs and wares and festival merchandise, and assists the volunteers. A friendly manner and resourcefulness are needed. Cashier skills, including the ability to use a credit card-reading device, are a plus. Shifts are available Saturday 10-10 and Sunday 10-7.
The Site Crew works in all phases of the event – pre-festival set-up, during the festival, and post-festival teardown and clean-up. Volunteers must be able to perform labor-intensive work, like setting up chairs and tables, which require lifting and carrying. Shifts are available Friday 4 PM-10 PM, Saturday 10 AM-10 PM, and Sunday 10 AM-10 PM.
Front Gate Welcome Crew
The Front Gate Welcome Crew handles ticket sales and wristband distribution, checks in festival performers and participants, and welcomes visitors and other volunteers. A calm, friendly demeanor and an attention to detail are needed. Retail experience and familiarity with a credit card-reading device are helpful. Shifts are available Saturday 9 AM to 9 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 10 PM.
Instrument Check Crew
The Instrument Check Crew accepts instruments and folding chairs for storage, makes sure items are signed in and out, and administers the claim checks. Organizational skills, the ability to make change, and an upbeat, positive attitude are needed. Shifts are available on Saturday from 9 AM to 10:30 PM and Sunday from 9 AM to 7:30 PM.
Performer Hospitality Crew
The Performer Hospitality Crew ensures that performers have sufficient water in all staging areas and as well as sufficient supplies of food and beverages in the green room. Volunteers also keep the staging areas and green room tidy, assist performers with questions such as stage schedule and how to arrange for hotel transport, and address any other performer concerns. Shifts are available on Saturday from 10 AM to 10 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 7 PM.
Safety and Security Crew
The Safety and Security Crew keeps performers’ areas secure and verifies that everyone on site has a wristband or other form of credential. Volunteers also ensure that aisles are kept clear, handicapped visitors get any assistance needed, and emergencies are addressed and handled quickly. A calm demeanor and the ability to think on one’s feet are needed. Shifts are available on Saturday from 9 AM to 10:30 PM and Sunday from 9 AM to 7:30 PM.
The Media Crew takes digital photos and records digital videos of each day’s festival activities. Volunteers may be given specific assignments in addition to general shooting on site; those who record videos may be asked to interview people at the festival. No later than 30 days after the festival, each volunteer must submit a disc or flash drive containing “best-of” sets of festival photos and videos to the Susquehanna Folk Music Society office and must give blanket permission for their use in print and on the website. Shifts are available on Saturday from 10 AM to 10 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 7 PM.
Stage Management Crew
The Stage Management Crew supervises the various festival stages by maintaining the festival schedule, ensuring that performers have what they need, assisting with communications between performers and the sound engineers, and helping with loading band gear on and off the stages. Shifts are available on Saturday from 9 AM to 10 PM and Sunday from 9 AM to 7 PM.
