Shape Note Singing with Robin Bannerji & Maria Cramer

Maria Cramer and Robin Bannerji sit close together on grass with four Shape Note hymnals open on their laps.
Pickin' Place Sunday, 10:00 am to 11:30 am

Shape note singing is full-voiced, energetic, and deeply emotional a cappella harmony designed for beginners to pick up and sing. It originated in early American Christian congregational singing, and while the themes — struggle, love, death, and devotion — are intense, they are deeply resonant in every age. In this workshop, we will orient singers to the form of shape note singing using the most popular songbook, The Sacred Harp, and teach the class how to lead songs in the center of the hollow square. A regular sing will follow the singing school.

Robin Banerji and Maria Cramer have been singing shape note music in community for three years, attending numerous all-day sings and conventions on the East Coast of the United States and abroad. They have led singing schools at several dance weekends, including Head for the Hills in Northeastern Pennsylvania and Dandelion Romp in Oberlin, Ohio.
